ACT Awards 2006
Kate Roberts, Owen Roberts & Kim Waalderbos
(GUELPH, July 27, 2006) - Everything came up roses for CanACT members this week as they received top honours for stellar communication activities and initiatives, as part of the annual Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow awards competition. The winners were recognized at the organization’s annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, the municipality that calls itself the City of Roses (like Windsor, Ontario).

CanACT president Kate Roberts, member Kim Waalderbos and adviser Owen Roberts were on hand for the recognition and collected 13 awards, including the prestigious award for “Chapter of the Year – Educational Activities”. This award reflected the club’s outstanding educational offerings that saw members take part in a fall semester study tour to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, and a week-long spring field trip to Belize.

Two CanACT members were recognized with a special Award of Excellence by winning their respective contest categories and divisions. Jeanine Wallace, now with the Ontario Soybean Growers, was the top Electronic Media Division winner with her two-minute Town and Country Ontario television segment on cattle identification tags. And Kate Roberts, who is interning with GROWMARK Inc. this summer, was the top Publications Division winner with her Advance magazine highlighting food and materials research.

Other CanACT award winners in the competition were:

  • Katie Cheesmond, fourth place in video production
  • Jennifer Christie, fourth place in the short feature category
  • Brian Innes, first place in the short feature category
  • Jennifer Peart, first place for short feature (personality profile) and first place for news story
  • Kate Roberts, second place for research-related writing
  • Kim Waalderbos, first place for research-related writing and second place in the news release division.
